2017 Toyota Prius Prime Photos

Toyota unveiled the fourth-generation Prius late last year, and to kick off the 2016 New York Auto Show, the brand took the wraps off a new plug-in hybrid version called the Prius Prime.

Toyota says that the Prius Prime is expected to offer an estimated electric driving range of 22 miles from an 8.8 battery pack, meeting the daily commuter distance of over half of U.S. drivers. The Prius Prime will be able to stay in electric vehicle (EV) mode at speeds up to 84 mph, and Toyota says that one 11.3-gallon tank of regular-grade gasoline and a full electric charge can take the Prius Prime over 600 miles. Fully charging the battery pack takes about five-and-a-half hours on a 240V charger.

Toyota says that the 22-mile EV-only range is usable at speeds up to 84 MPH. Because the Prius Prime has a smaller (and lighter) 8.8 kWh battery pack than do battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the Prius Prime can charge at home or work in under three hours on a 240V circuit, or 5.5 hours on a standard 120V AC line. The last BEV we tested took over 14 hours to charge that way. Range is estimated at an amazing 600 miles on a full charge and with a full tank of gasoline
