New York Auto Show 2016 debut Toyota GT86 will be unveiled

Toyota has taken the wraps off the 2017 GT 86 facelift bound to show up next week in New York. The former Scion FR-S will reemerge as the 2017 Toyota 86, sporting power and performance upgrades

"When we announced the transition of the Scion models to Toyota we hadn't planned on changing the names of our cars, but by popular demand, for our sports car, we decided to adopt the global name of 86," said Toyota Division Group Vice President Bill Fay.

Toyota will unveil the 2017 86 in New York. It already sells the Scion FR-S as the 86 in Japan, and calls it the GT86 in Europe.

The drivetrain is unaltered, so you might still be left wanting for torque and grip if you’ve been bred on turbocharged hot hatches, but you shouldn’t be left wanting for smiles if you appreciate a slick gearchange and the agility of a light, simple rear-driven sports car. The bald stats? 197bhp, 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds and a 140mph top speed. The 2.0-liter boxer-four's output grows to 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque – increases of 5 hp and 5 lb-ft – on manual-transmission models. The 86 still isn't the turbocharged rear-wheel-drive coupe of some people's dreams,
